This 10-day vacation will take into the heart of Peru’s northern cloud forest to experience the highlights of Chachapoya culture. From the Sarcophagi of Karajia, and a remote Inca Trail leading to the jungle community of Levanto, you will journey. The adventure takes you to the mysterious mausoleums of Revash, the breathtaking Gocta waterfalls and the mountaintop fortress of Kuélap.

Day 1: Chiclayo – Chachapoyas

Pickup from Chiclayo Airport and private transport to the city of Chachapoyas. We see panoramic vistas of cloud forest and mountain ridges. First night in Casona Colonial, a comfortable 3-star lodge. (BOX LUNCH)

Day 2: Karajia – Pinchourco – Chachapoyas

We visit the famous Sarcophagi of Karajia, built into the walls of a cliff. From we can see more than 30 intact sarcophagi, joined in groups of 4 to 8, with red and white painted faces. We spend another night at Casona Colonial in Chachapoyas. (B)

Day 3: Chachapoyas – Inca Trail – Choctamal

We drive to the community of Levanto to start our walk along the Inca Trail back to Chachapoyas, which takes about 3 hours. After lunch we drive to Choctamal to spend the night at the Marvelous Spatuletail Lodge. (B/L)

Day 4: Kuelap

We spend the day Kuelap, a spectacular pre-lnca walled city hidden atop a precipitous mountain. Although Kuelap was discovered 60 years before Machu Picchu, it is not as well-known to the outside world. Nevertheless recent amazing discoveries in nearby areas that relate to Kuelap and to its history have captured the attention of archaeologists, international magazines and film companies. Orchids and Bromeliads cover the walls and trees, bearded with moss. On the road back to Chachapoyas we can see the platforms of Macro, built on the ridges of a mountain on the banks of the Utcubamba River. We spend the night at the lodge in Choctamal. (B/BOX LUNCH)

Day 5: Choctamal – Revash – Leymebamba

On the road to Leymebamba we visit the mausoleums of Revash. These houses of the dead bear a resemblance to the Anasazi ruins in Mesa Verde, Colorado, and are also built on a rocky slope at the base of sheer cliffs. We spend the night in Leymebamba.(B)

Day 6: Leymebamba – Tajopampa

We start our expedition on horseback or on foot towards Petaca. On the path we pass through stands of virgin forest and eat lunch by the riverbank. In the afternoon we explore the pre-Inca cemetary of Petaca, and spend the night in a rustic cabin in Tajopampa. (B/L/D)

Day 7: Tajopampa – Leymebamba

Today we explore the area aound Tajopampa and visit Bóveda with its circular houses. We see the famous Diablo Wasi (Wasi Devil) on the slopes of a mountain, with mausoleums that contain skeletons and textiles that hang from the tombs. We return by horse or on foot to Leymembamba, where we stay the night. (B/L)

Day 8: Leymebamba – Museum Centro Mallqui – Chachapoyas

We start at the Museum of the Mummies, which was built with a donation from the Austrian government in 1988 to hold 219 mummies that were found in the nearby Lagoon of the Condors, complete with all their artefacts. We spend the night at Casona Colonial in Chachapoyas. (B)

Day 9: Chachapoyas – Gocta — Chachapoyas

Private transport drives us for two hours to the path to the Lookout where we get our first view of the Gocta Waterfall, one of the highest and most spectacular in the world. During this escursion we can see several species of hummingbirds, toucans, and other tropical birds, along with flowers, monkeys and other jungle animals. We return to Chachapoyas and Casona Colonial. (B)

Day 10: Chachapoyas – Chiclayo

Private transport takes about 9 hours to reach Chiclayo for a connecting flight to Lima.(B/BOX LUNCH)
