Paracas & Ballestas Islands

Paracas Marine Reserve Video

The Ballestas Islands lie off the coast of the city of Pisco — jagged, vaulted formations along the Pacific shoreline.

Exotic fauna thrives in this unique environment, with colors that contrast with the rocky relief.

A sanctuary for thousands of sea lions and more than 150 species of marine birds, including Humboldt penguin, cormorants, boobies and pelicans.

Visitors ply a path by boat through natural tunnels and into caves formed over millions of years by the pounding surf.

The seaside resort town and national reserve of Paracas is the launching point for boats that carry visitors to within a few meters of the Ballestas Islands.

Peering from sea toward the Andean hills along the shore offers a bird’s eye view of the ancient “Candelabro”.

The enormous candelabra-shaped figure is etched into the landscape at the highest point of a cliff side overlooking the bay, possibly a remnant of the ancient Paracas culture, which thrived here from 1300 BC until 200 AD, or the Chavin Empire.
