The Legendary Qoyllur Rit’i Pilgrimage of Cusco

Overview

There is no event in the world comparable to the high mountain festival of Qoyllur Rit’i (or “Snow Star” in Quechua). This stunning celebration is an incredible opportunity to experience Andean culture up close. Qoyllur Rit’i is an annual pilgrimage of tens of thousands of people, mostly from mountain villages, to the Sinakara glacier. There they worship Taytacha (Father Earth), Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the powerful Apu deities that inhabit the four surrounding mountains (Ausangate, Hunacauri, Qanyaqway, and Colquepunku).

Note on Conditions at Qoyllur Rit’i 2026

On horseback approaching the Qoyllur Rit'i Festival

This trip is strenuous and not suitable for the faint of heart. It involves hiking and a night of camping at high altitude and is suitable for people who consider themselves adventurous. You will be surrounded by tens of thousands of other campers.

You will experience rowdy crowds, the curiosity of people who may have never seen a foreigner before, and food that will not necessarily be prepared with the same levels of hygiene to which you may be accustomed.

This is a journey deep into a traditional rural culture and, as such, in addition to being very rewarding, it entails a decrease in living standards during the few days we are immersed in the celebration.

You will be with a very experienced guide who will make your life as comfortable as possible, but you may experience some moments of discomfort. Having said all this, the reward is two days and two nights of incredible traditional music, dance, and fireworks that few foreign travelers experience.

An Amazing 3-Day Itinerary

Leaving Cusco around 8 in the morning, we’ll make the three-hour journey to Mawayani to begin the pilgrimage. After a light lunch, we’ll embark on a moderate to demanding 2½ to 3-hour hike, covering approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles). Pack mules and muleteers will help us transport equipment and your personal belongings as we ascend from 4,500 meters (12,800 feet) to the Sanctuary of the Lord of Qoyllur Rit’i, located at 4,500 meters (3,900 m.a.s.l. – 4,800 m.a.s.l.).

Dance groups representing different towns and community groups – known as comparsas – perform in amazingly elaborate costumes representing different religious and mythical characters. The protagonists are the Ukukus, mythical half-man half-bear creatures, who represent the guardian spirits of the festival.

We’ll settle in for dinner at our comfortable camp, among tens of thousands of other pilgrims. (L/D)

After an early breakfast, we’ll go to the church to participate in the special mass dedicated to The Lord of Qoyllur Rit’i. Then we’ll begin the collective march to the sacred mountain sanctuary of Qoyllur Rit’i to witness and participate in ancestral rites and customs.

Vendors sell “alacitas,” or small souvenirs, to take to the chapel and have blessed in a symbolic gesture to obtain your heart’s desire. It is said that if you attend the festival three years in a row for this blessing, you will be assured that your wish will be granted. The hypnotic music of pentatonic-scale panpipes and drums fills the air, and throughout the night enormous fireworks are launched from huge rustic scaffolding. (B/L/D)

After an early breakfast, we’ll join the line of pilgrims descending through the valley to Mawayani, where our vehicle awaits to return us to Cusco, where we’ll arrive around 2:00 p.m. (B/L)
