{"id":8931,"date":"2014-05-30T17:58:55","date_gmt":"2014-05-30T22:58:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/?p=8931"},"modified":"2016-01-18T17:58:04","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T22:58:04","slug":"machu-picchu-visitor-schedule-to-change-and-bathrooms-to-be-added","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2014\/machu-picchu-visitor-schedule-to-change-and-bathrooms-to-be-added\/8931\/","title":{"rendered":"Machu Picchu visitor schedule to change and bathrooms to be added"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But the aim is not to increase the number of tourists entering the Inca sanctuary, officials insist.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\">A new ticketing system will be implemented by year&#8217;s end for visitors to Machu Picchu to enter the Inca citadel in two shifts, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, Peru&#8217;s vice minister of Culture said this week.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"notranslate\">The change is being made to streamline access and even out load capacity at the ruins, <a href=\"http:\/\/gestion.pe\/economia\/gobierno-mejorara-condiciones-visita-turistas-machu-picchu-y-evitar-su-degradacion-2098509\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"st\">Luis Jaime Castillo<\/span><\/a> told reporters.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea of creating two shifts is not to put more people into Machu Picchu, but rather to distribute them more adequately,&#8221; he said. &#8220;As it stands now, 90 percent of visits to the sanctuary occur in the morning, and the rest in the afternoon. In other words, the current distribution is not right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8932 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/two_shift_entry_into_machu_picchu.jpg\" alt=\"two_shift_entry_into_machu_picchu\" width=\"496\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/two_shift_entry_into_machu_picchu.jpg 496w, https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/two_shift_entry_into_machu_picchu-300x159.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2011\/pressure-mounts-to-increase-machu-picchu-visitor-limit-ahead-of-unesco-experts-visit\/3086\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pressure from Peru&#8217;s tourism industry has been mounting in recent years to increase the number of visitors to Machu Picchu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The creation of entry shifts, and predetermined routes with mandatory tour guides and time limits have been some of the main strategies advanced to maximize carrying capacity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2014\/mandatory-tour-guides-and-fixed-routes-coming-soon-for-machu-picchu\/8533\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rules promulgated by the Ministry of Culture in Cusco, currently under review, would do all of those things<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Castillo dismissed suggestions that the creation of shifts would be used to increase the total number of daily visitors from the current official limit of 2,500 to 4,500.<\/p>\n<p>But in fact, Peru started to blow past the 2,500 daily limits agreed to with UNESCO starting in 2011.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8468\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8468\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/machu-picchu-visitor-totals-1980-2013.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8468\" title=\"Click on image to enlarge Machu Picchu visitor totals 1980-2013 infographic\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/machu-picchu-visitor-totals-1980-2013-sm.jpg\" alt=\"Machu Picchu visitor totals 1980-2013 \" width=\"490\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/machu-picchu-visitor-totals-1980-2013-sm.jpg 490w, https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/machu-picchu-visitor-totals-1980-2013-sm-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click on image to enlarge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2014\/checkpoint-entrance-change-for-machu-picchu-considered\/8178\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Ministry of Culture announced in January that it was considering the <span class=\"notranslate\">establishment of distinct morning and afternoon periods of admission into Machu Picchu<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another possible plan then-under consideration, which will now come to pass is the installation of high-tech toilets within the archaeological sanctuary, equipped to handle disposal of solid waste, Castillo said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are working with representatives from the Technological University of California in the aforementioned processing of solid and liquid waste,&#8221;
