{"id":5450,"date":"2018-11-05T11:00:23","date_gmt":"2018-11-05T16:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/?p=5450"},"modified":"2023-08-25T15:30:05","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T20:30:05","slug":"anti-bullfighting-activists-in-lima-demand-an-end-to-the-traditional-blood-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2018\/anti-bullfighting-activists-in-lima-demand-an-end-to-the-traditional-blood-sport\/5450\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-bullfighting activists in Lima demand an end to the traditional blood sport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hundreds of anti-bullfighting activists, known as &#8220;antitaurinos&#8221; in Spanish, marched&nbsp;on the Plaza de Toros de Acho in historic downtown Lima to demand Peru ban what they \u2014 and we \u2014 consider a senseless and abhorrent blood-sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They carried signs that read: &#8220;Stop already with the running of the bulls!&#8221; and &#8220;Torture is neither art nor culture&#8221; and clashed with police, who used tear gas to break up the demonstration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/world\/article\/0,8599,1862867,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"238\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/death_in_the_afternoon.jpg\" alt=\"Death in the Afternoon Draws a Crowd by Lucien Chauvin (Time)\" class=\"wp-image-5455\" title=\"Death in the Afternoon Draws a Crowd by Lucien Chauvin (Time)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/death_in_the_afternoon.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/death_in_the_afternoon-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;No more killings, that is all we want,&#8221; Nadia Soto, one of the protesters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/world-latin-america-46104453\/peru-police-clash-with-anti-bullfighting-protesters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told BBC news<\/a>. &#8220;These sordid games should not exist.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bullfighting season in Lima&#8217;s&nbsp; historic Plaza de Acho \u2014 the second oldest bullring in the world \u2014 began yesterday and will run every Sunday through the first week of December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proponents say that bullfighting is an integral part of Peruvian culture, going back to early Spanish colonial times. The corrida de toros was made an official spectacle in Lima in 1558.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, protests against bullfighting have become as much an annual event as the bullfighting itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rpp.com.pe\/2012-11-03-activistas-realizaron-protesta-antitaurina-en-plaza-san-martin-noticia_537024.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">In 2012, semi-nude, the demonstrators lay prone on the ground<\/a>, with fake blood spattered across their bodies and fake barbed spears, called bandilleras, taped to their backs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rpp.com.pe\/2012-11-03-activistas-realizaron-protesta-antitaurina-en-plaza-san-martin-noticia_537024.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/anti-bullfighting_activists-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5451\" title=\"Anti-bullfighting activists in Lima demand an end to the traditional blood sport. \" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/anti-bullfighting_activists-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/anti-bullfighting_activists.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cas-international.org\/EN\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CAS International<\/a>, an animal rights organization dedicated to the abolition of bullfighting worldwide, reports that the sport is legal in Peru, in spite of national animal protection legislation for domestic and captive animals.
