In 1532, the Inca  \u00f1<\/em>usta Quispe Sisa was just 15 years old. She attracted the attention of Conquistador Francisco Pizarro, a 54-year-old bachelor, who was charmed by the girl\u2019s cheerful nature and vivacious manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

To ingratiate himself with his captor, the Inca Atahualpa offered Quispe Sisa \u2014 his half sister \u2014 to Pizarro as a gift. The Marques accepted, taking the girl as his concubine, but only after she was baptized Do\u00f1a In\u00e9s Huaylas Yupanqui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For centuries, what was known \u2014 or at least considered important \u2014 about Quispe Sisa was this:  She bore Pizarro two children, Francisca, famously dubbed the “first Mestiza of Peru,\u201d\u009d who would later become a wealthy and powerful heir to her father\u2019s estate, and Gonzalo, who died before his 10th<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1537, Pizarro abandoned Quispe Sisa for another Inca princess, her half sister Angelina Yupanqui, who bore him two more sons, Francisco and Juan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the sum total of Quispe Sisa\u2019s historical role\u201d\u00a6 little more than a footnote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was only in 1989 that Peru\u2019s pre-eminent historian Mar\u00ed\u00ada Rostworowski revealed that Quispe Sisa was no bit player. Going through the Archives of the Indies in Seville, Spain, Rostworowski discovered that, in fact, the teenager\u2019s actions saved Pizarro and his forces from annihilation by Inca general Quizo Yupanqui during the Inca rebellion of 1536.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
