{"id":13609,"date":"2018-06-21T16:58:19","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T21:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/?p=13609"},"modified":"2023-08-25T15:47:55","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T20:47:55","slug":"cuscos-rainbow-mountain-averts-mining-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2018\/cuscos-rainbow-mountain-averts-mining-crisis\/13609\/","title":{"rendered":"Cusco&#8217;s Rainbow Mountain Averts Mining Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Canadian-owned mining company has surrendered its digging rights at Rainbow Mountain after protests by the local community and a personal intervention by Peru President&nbsp;Martin Vizcarra.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minquest Peru SAC, owned by the Canadian Camino Minerals, sent a letter yesterday to the Regional Government of Cusco relinquishing the concession granted by Peru&#8217;s Ministry of Energy and Mines, <a href=\"https:\/\/larepublica.pe\/sociedad\/1264328-montana-siete-colores-empresa-renuncio-concesion-minera-montana\" rel=\"nofollow\">local media reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company wrote after evaluating different alternatives its shareholders and officers were willing to cede the concession out of &#8220;their high respect and commitment to preserve the cultural and tourist&#8221; destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rainbow-mountain-tours.jpg\" alt=\"Small tour groups hikes the lower slopes of the multi-colored Vinicunca mountain range\" class=\"wp-image-13613\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rainbow-mountain-tours.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rainbow-mountain-tours-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rainbow Mountain&#8217;s&nbsp; stripes formed&nbsp;by trace minerals of iron oxide red, bright yellow iron sulphide and varying shades of chlorite green have made it one of Cusco&#8217;s most iconic sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also known as Cerro Colorado, K\u2019ayrawire Wininkunka, Seven-Color Mountain or, most popularly, Vinicunca, the remote mountain range was interpreted by the Ministry of Energy and Mines to be located just outside the regional conservation area of Mount Ausangate, Cusco&#8217;s most sacred peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You Might Also Like: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2019\/palcoyo-mountain\/15748\/\">Where is Palcoyo Mountain? Learn more about this.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it allowed the&nbsp;Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute to issue the mining concession to Minquest in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The local community of Pampachiri was up in arms after the NGO CooperAcci\u00f3n alerted them that Rainbow Mountain was in the middle of the mining concession called &#8220;Red beds 2,&#8221; which covered an area of 400 hectares between the municipalities of Cusipata and Pitumarca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minquest announced its commitment to &#8220;safeguarding the integrity of both the cultural and touristic development of the area, as a representative and cultural icon of the Peru&#8221; yesterday, soon after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lavanguardia.com\/ocio\/viajes\/20180621\/45296627843\/el-presidente-de-peru-aseguro-que-la-montana-de-siete-colores-sera-preservada.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">President Vizcarra weighed in on his Twitter account<\/a> with this sweet tweet:&nbsp; &#8220;The Seven Colors Mountain, an important natural conservation area, will be preserved.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/adventure-tours\/rainbow-mountain-peru-tours-4-days-3-nights-trek-vinicunca\/\">Rainbow Mountain is part of a popular multi-day mountain adventure trek that we offer<\/a>. It is also a&nbsp;popular full-day trip from Cusco. Until recently it was accessible only through Pitumarca, involving a two-hour ride by bus or car to the town, followed by a several hour long trek or horse ride.
