{"id":10773,"date":"2015-08-25T17:24:25","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T22:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/?p=10773"},"modified":"2019-05-29T17:00:07","modified_gmt":"2019-05-29T22:00:07","slug":"regulating-the-back-door-entrance-to-machu-picchu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2015\/regulating-the-back-door-entrance-to-machu-picchu\/10773\/","title":{"rendered":"Regulating the back door entrance to Machu Picchu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Plans are afoot to build a ticket gate, security post, rest rooms and facilities for guide services along the previously unregulated western route from Santa Teresa to Machu Picchu.<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Carlos Nieto, Machu Picchu&#8217;s chief of Peru\u2019s National Service of Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp), said\u00a0that the\u00a0formal multi-sector plan will be released in October, in accordance with Peru&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2015\/the-machu-picchu-master-plan-2015-2019\/10465\/\">new Machu Picchu Master Plan<\/a> and recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/2015\/machu-picchu-spared-from-unesco-endangered-sites-list\/10709\/\">agreements with UNESCO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 100,000 tourists reach Machu Picchu each year from Santa Teresa instead of taking the train from Poroy-Ollantaytambo into Aguas Calientes, Nieto <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andina.com.pe\/agencia\/noticia-estableceran-plan-ordenamiento-ruta-a-machu-picchu-santa-teresa-571883.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow\">told state-run news agency Andina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The alternative Santa Teresa route involves boarding the train at the Hydroelectic Station, or walking the six mile-plus distance along the tracks.<\/p>\n<p>It would be along this stretch where a control booth would be erected and a entrance fee collected, although no set rate has yet been determined, he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is not possible (that visitors are allowed to) enter via this route to Machu Picchu at whatever time they like.
