Local officials are putting the finishing touches on plans to push back against environmental degradation at the\u00a0 Sacsayhuaman Archaeological park.<\/p>\n

Roberto Rojas C\u00e9spedes, head of Cusco’s\u00a0Regional Management of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, tells daily El Comercio<\/a>\u00a0his institution has nearly completed the\u00a0regulatory framework to launch the regional ordinance, titled\u00a0“Design and Creation of the Green Lung of Cusco in the Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Complex.”<\/p>\n

“We’re going to do\u00a0forestation, improve the handling\u00a0of solid waste, create an ethnobotanical park, but mainly declare Sacsayhuaman<\/strong><\/a> a green lung\u00a0area for the\u00a0province of Cusco,” he is quoted saying.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0ordinance would\u00a0push back against informal building and development that has been encroaching into the park zone.\u00a0The park needs to deal better with the solid waste produced by tourists, curb unauthorized horseback\u00a0riding\u00a0that spoils the landscape and\u00a0confront locals who use\u00a0remote corners of the \u00a0park as an illegal landfill, he said.<\/p>\n

“Deforestation rates<\/span> are increasing\u00a0along with<\/span>\u00a0exotic plant species<\/span> such as eucalyptus<\/span>, which<\/span> are eroding<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0soil,” he said. “There have been wildfires.” \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The plan would implement an aggressive planting campaign to ensure that 70 species of native plant\u00a0species comprise\u00a0at least 30 percent of the greenery.<\/p>\n
