The caj\u00f3n\u00a0is\u00a0little more than a wooden box with a hole in it, yet it\u00a0is one of the world’s most popular percussion instruments in the world today.<\/p>\n

This six sided drum provides the\u00a0hypnotic pulse\u00a0of Peruvian Criollo and Afroperuano, as well as\u00a0musical genres around the globe.<\/p>\n

The caj\u00f3n was invented in Peru by African slaves during the early Spanish colonial period. Deprived of their instruments, they fashioned\u00a0improvised drums from inconspicuous\u00a0shipping\u00a0crates, which\u00a0helped them get around\u00a0laws prohibiting traditional African music. They kept their culture alive.<\/p>\n

According to this Ted.Ed video, Paco de Luc\u00ada, the virtuoso guitarists, and his percussionist Rubem Dantas introduced the\u00a0instrument to Europe.<\/p>\n

They discovered the caj\u00f3n while on tour in Peru in 1977 and \u2014 recognizing its potential in flamenco music \u2014 brought it back to Spain.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0caj\u00f3n\u00a0caught on immediately with flamenco musicians. It was they who thought up the idea to stretch a guitar string inside the box behind the caj\u00f3n’s striking surface, or \u00a0tapa. That innovation remains a prominent feature of the modern instrument.<\/p>\n

Last year, Paco de Luc\u00ada was honored during the VII\u00a0International Festival of the Cajon Peruano.<\/p>\n

This year, the week long festival will\u00a0kick of\u00a0on\u00a0Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m., with the annual\u00a0Afro-Peruano drum fest\u00a0in Lima\u2019s historic Plaza de Armas. The festival this year commemorates\u00a0the event’s\u00a0founder and director\u00a0Rafael Santa Cruz. A tireless champion of the Afroperuano music, he\u00a0died unexpectedly of a heart attack last August.<\/p>\n
