The visitors are greeted by the planetarium\u2019s director, Professor Erwin Salazar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For 30 years he has studied the night sky of the Southern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And since 2007, he says, the Planetarium Cusco has fulfilled an important cultural and scientific mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/profesor-erwin-salazar-director-of-planetarium-cusco.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/profesor-erwin-salazar-director-of-planetarium-cusco.png\" alt=\"Profesor Erwin Salazar, director of planetarium cusco\" class=\"wp-image-5734\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/profesor-erwin-salazar-director-of-planetarium-cusco.png 350w, https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/profesor-erwin-salazar-director-of-planetarium-cusco-300x227.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Erwin Salazar: &#8220;The principle objective of this planetarium is to show the world the astronomy of the Incas; to take advantage of the fact that here, we not only demonstrate constellations and star clusters \u2014 just like every other planetarium \u2014 besides that we have the plus of actually star gazing directly with telescopes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the night air gets chilly, piping hot coca leaf tea is prepared, and warm blankets are handed out. It\u2019s in this cozy setting that the guests are introduced, many for the first time, to the southern night sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Handling a powerful telescope, Professor Erwin\u2019s enthusiasm for the stars and planets is contagious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Planetarium Cusco was conceived soon after Professor Erwin\u2019s nephew Roberto, a talented musician, got married to an equally talented young poet, Ana Mar\u00eda Milla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ana Mar\u00eda\u2019s father, Carlos, describes what happened this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carlos Milla: \u201cI would say that stars aligned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carlos is a local hotel owner and an icon of Cusco\u2019s tourism sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says that in 2005, after a family party, he and Professor Erwin sat down with the newlyweds and began brain storming about possible business ventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carlos says the conversation rekindled a personal dream of his that had been dormant for 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe very first time that I attended a planetarium was in Lucerne in Switzerland and that was in 1980, and I was really, really, really amazed. And I said, \u2018One day I will have that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there was a hitch. Where would they build their planetarium?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salazar: \u201cOriginally, the planetarium was going to be something different, something very modern and built farther up from this location. But because construction was prohibited by Cusco\u2019s National Institute of Culture, we settled on the abandoned home of a humble pottery maker. And that is why we ended up with a planetarium hidden inside a mountain cabin. And it turned out to be an idea more original than we could have conceived of. The success of this planetarium is precisely because it\u2019s different than any other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The planetarium consists of two cultural interpretation rooms with photos, panels and 3D graphics. In its center is an 18-foot diameter dome with seating for 25 to 30 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/ana-maria-milla-explaining-the-basis-of-inca-cosmo-vision.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/ana-maria-milla-explaining-the-basis-of-inca-cosmo-vision.png\" alt=\"Ana Maria explaining the basis of the Inca cosmo vision at the Planetarium Cusco\" class=\"wp-image-5735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/ana-maria-milla-explaining-the-basis-of-inca-cosmo-vision.png 350w, https:\/\/www.fertur-travel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/ana-maria-milla-explaining-the-basis-of-inca-cosmo-vision-300x227.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is here that Ana Mar\u00eda uses a custom-made virtual star projector to demonstrate the constellations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ana Mar\u00eda Milla: \u201cNow, the highlights about the Incan astronomy and some interesting story telling\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emphasizing the Southern sky, she points out an ancient celestial menagerie of powerful Inca deities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ana Mar\u00eda Milla: \u201cThe main one is around here, and actually has a bright eye, the star ALFA CENTAURO, a mouth, a couple of ears, long neck, body and legs\u2026 And here we have the big black llama. Do you see it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Planetarium Cusco is gaining in popularity, mostly by word of mouth.
