Iquitos

Iquitos Highlights

The Iron House, constructed entirely from iron trusses and sheets bolted together, was designed by Eifell for the Paris exhibition of 1889. It is said to have been transported to Iquitos unassembled on river barge by one of the city’s wealthy rubber barons.

The Clay House of Fitzcarrald, an adobe-brick warehouse, was home and office to Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald, the early 20th century rubber baron immortalized in the famous Werner Herzog film Fitzcarraldo.

Belén is Iquitos' waterfront district, where the homes and markets are built on stilts over the water to deal with the seasonal rise of the Amazon River, which swells as high as 30 feet (10m) between January and July.
