Home Tours Muyuna 4 Days - 3 Nights
Iquitos

IquitosIquitos, the frontier jungle city that in the 19th Century turned from a small outpost to the most important port in the Amazon basin, earning cosmopolitan status during the so called “Rubber Boom.”

The luxury of that bygone era is still embodied in the architecture, from the Iron House, designed by Eiffel for the 1889 Paris exhibition, to the stately houses erected along the Ramirez Hurtado promenade, overlooking the Amazon River. Today, the city bustles with three-wheeled "moto-taxis" and remains a vital port. It is also a gateway for adventurers seeking knowledge about the indigenous culture, the exotic wildlife and medicinal plants ready to be discovered.

Day 1: Iquitos - Muyuna Lodge

Pickup at Iquitos airport and, after a brief orientation tour of the city, transfer to harbor, where a speed boat will be waiting for you, ready to travel three hours upriver on the Amazon. Muyuna staff will welcome you with a typical drink. After settling in to your bungalow and having lunch, you will start your jungle adventure. A check list of the animals that have been previously seen will be provided. A short walk shows you the immense variety of flora in the region. In this trek, you can taste the water that the "urticaria tormentosa" has inside its vine, which is said to cure cancer. You will also be amazed looking at the ceiba tree, although you cannot see the top because of its towering height. (L/D)

Day 2: Muyuna Lodge

This day you will visit all the surrounding lakes and explore the jungle, looking for monkeys and sloths. Your guide will explain their habitat and behavior. Primates that you can expect to see in this trek are the squirrel monkeys, which always move in large groups, and the pygmy marmoset, the smallest monkey in the world. With the midday sun, your best option to refresh yourself is to take a dip in the lake. In the afternoon, while you enjoy an amazing sunset, fish for piranha in lake Corientillo. (B/L/D)

Day 3: Muyuna Lodge

In the morning you will make a bird watching excursion. This is the best hour to look for them because they begin their day feeding themselves in the trees. It will be easy to spot parrots, macaws, toucans, egrets, hawks, etc. The check list will help you to identify the species you see. Later, you will be taken by boats to the other side of the Amazon River, where pink dolphins ply the waters, playing around your boat. If your trip is made between July and November, you will also enjoy white sandy beaches that emerge when the river runs low. On the way back to the lodge, you will see the biggest aquatic plant in the world, the Victoria Regia. Share your afternoon with friendly people of the nearby San Juan of Yanayacu village. It is posible to buy traditional handcrafts fashioned from seeds. (B/L/D)

Day 4: Muyuna Lodge - Iquitos

Use canoes or go walking to the "Pungal", depending on the water level. This is an area that has several strangle figs, which is the favorite spot for pre-historic looking Hoatzin birds. After lunch, your jungle adventure experience will come to an end. You will travel the three hours back to Iquitos and be taken to the airport. (B/L)
