Travel advisory: bring crisp, new U.S. dollar bills for your Peru vacation

Yes, that’s right. It’s a fact that in Peru these days you will encounter seemingly ultra-finicky bank tellers and money changers who refuse to accept U.S. currency based on the slightest imperfection, real or imagined. Conversely, if a Peruvian automatic teller machine spits out a $20, $50 or $100 that shows any sign of wear, [...]

In indigenous crafts markets throughout Peru you’re going to encounter a wide selection of “100% baby alpaca” sweaters, shawls and blankets, usually at amazingly low discounted rates. Whether it be asking directions while roaming a village in the Sacred Valley or [...]

Tipping in Peru

As a general rule, fancy restaurants will include a 10% service charge in the bill, but it’s perfectly acceptable to give an extra 5% for exceptional service. In more modest restaurants, a few soles representing up to 5% of the bill is also a very nice gesture.

Interview with Dr. Fabiola León-Velarde Throughout most of history, human beings have tended to stick pretty close to the world’s low-lying regions. But there are exceptions. The Tibetan plateau in the Himalayas of central Asia, the high mountain ranges of Ethiopia in Africa and the Andean cordillera here in Peru and Bolivia. Over thousands of [...]
